How to Wear Less Makeup
Ok this is the secret everyone wants to know..how to have amazing natural looking makeup without so much product aka cake face. Let’s face the first fact, it’s going to take a lot products to get to this natural look, but since there are so many products involved the key is you get to use less of each product. I know I know, i’m saying wear less makeup, but use more products and that’s exactly right.
To get the natural glam look you will need a lot of different products to replicate what the face naturally has, highlights and shadows, which is why I recommend using less foundation, concealer and contour, while also using it wisely. We have to be strategic about it for best results. The natural look truly is about enhancing your features.
First, you need to understand what each product is for and use it just for that instead of just layering a bunch of things on with no direction. Foundation is used to even the skin tone, so if you don’t have much to cover up, it’s as simple as don’t use too much, trust me. Try to make it a habit to use less foundation because using too much is the true source of cake-y makeup. In the picture reel below you can see that I use foundation just in the middle of my face to even out any redness my skin naturally has.
Next, I use concealer. Concealer is used to conceal any blemishes that the foundation wasn’t powerful enough to cover. Concealer can also be used to highlight and/or lift the face. Highlighting means bringing light to any areas that are dark and lift means to bring forward any areas using the illusion of light. As you’ll see in the picture below, I use concealer under my lips because i’m starting to have a little darkness in that area that i’d like to combat, my laugh lines to bring them forward, my reverse contour (under the cheekbones) to enhance the contour without using more contour and same idea for the sides of my nose. I luckily do not have any under eye bags that need concealing or brightening, so I choose not to add any under my eyes. Lastly, I like to lift my eyes, so putting concealer from the end of my bottom waterline to my forehead following the angle of my water line does just that.
The next strategy is cream contour, which is truly a game changer. I used to think cream contour was so unnecessary, but boy was I wrong. I would use it a lot on photoshoots as a freelance makeup artist, but that’s because I felt it was more natural, so I didn’t think of using it on myself. Once I did, I never went back. The way the product applies to your face in exactly the right places and melts into your skin is pure perfection. If you’ve ever had trouble with contouring I highly suggest cream contour. If you want to know more about contouring check out this blog How To Contour like a Pro.
After doing all of this work you have to make sure that you set it. Powder doesn’t always have to be cake-y, but it is necessary to lock and seal the work you’ve done. After placing the foundation, concealer and cream contour strategically you want to try your best not to disturb the placement, so I like to use a flat brush with a natural pressed powder such as MAC Mineralize Skin Finish Powder or Sephora Baked Powder Foundation. I lightly go over my entire face.
Next to last is blush. Blush is so necessary especially for a “natural look”. Blush makes our faces appear more youthful and flush the way skin naturally gets. I have so many favorite blushes that I will make a separate blog for, but it’s worth mentioning not to skip that step in this one.
Lastly, powder contour or bronzer. To be honest, it isn’t necessary because the cream contour should still be showing through the face powder, but if you’d like to enhance it even more and set it you can use a powder. My favorite go to are E.L.F Primer Infused Bronzer when i’m feeling matte and MAC Mineralize Skin Finish Powder in Give Me Sun! for a satin finish.
So all in all remember beauties, yes it takes a lot of different products, but you get to use them a heck of a lot less if you are strategic in how you’re applying them! I hope this helps you understand the use of each product and how to get more effortless natural looking makeup.
